Hispano-Moresque Bronze Mortar. Circa 15th century CE. 175mm x 95mm. A heavy cast bronze mortar formed of a cylindrical body with flared rim and eight ribs or fins, four on each side divided by two prominent handles, each with a large suspension loop. The ribs around the body give the piece much of its decorative appeal but also reinforce the mortar’s body. Mortars of this type have their origins in twelfth century Moorish Spain, and possibly earlier. Ref: Maddison & Savage-Smith (1997, p. 299).
